چکیده

It has been repeatedly shown that face inversion affects the recognition of emotional faces. However, previous results are heterogeneous concerning the affected emotions and the influence of presentation time is unclear. We examined the impact of limited presentation time (200 ms) on the face-inversion effect during recognition of basic emotions in 128 healthy young adults. Data analysis revealed differential inversion effects for emotional expressions, further modified by limitation of presentation time: when presentation was limited, we observed inversion effects for angry and neutral faces which were absent in the unlimited trials. In the unlimited condition, inversion particularly affected recognition of disgust and sadness. No general inversion effect occurred for neutral expressions. Error analysis highlighted specific confusions for the inverted condition, except for happy and neutral expressions. Hence, emotion recognition is affected by inversion--an indicator for configural processing, and presentation time--an indicator for cognitive effort of processing.

Event-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces

Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...

The Function of Pitch Range Variations in Samples of Emotional Expressions in Persian

This study aims at investigating the interface between emotion and intonation patterns (more specifically, duration and pitch amplitude of speech). To this end, the acoustic properties of spectral parameters related to speech prosody are investigated. The results of acoustic and Statistical analysis show that mean level and range of FO in the contours vary strongly as a function of the degree o...

Turn to me: electrophysiological correlates of frontal vs. averted view face and body processing are associated with trait empathy

The processing of emotional faces and bodies has been associated with brain regions related to empathic responding in interpersonal contexts. The aim of the present Electroencephalography (EEG) study was to investigate differences in the time course underlying the processing of bodies and faces showing neutral, happy, or angry expressions. The P100 and N170 were analyzed in response to the pres...

The inversion effect for neutral and emotional facial expressions on amygdala activity.

Neuroimaging studies have reported activation of the amygdala in response to faces and emotional facial expressions. The way in which visual facial information is processed in the amygdala remains, however, unknown. The face inversion effect, a deficit in the processing of inverted compared to upright facial stimuli, has provided an important clue with regard to the visual processes that might ...

SECTION 2. RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES Emotions and Social Development: Infants’ Recognition of Emotions in Others

Infants generally begin to recognize emotional expressions after 6 months of age; some reports have even observed recognition in neonates. Emotional recognition is important for social referencing, in which infants “read” their parents’ expressions to understand events. Three methods for studying how infants come to recognize emotion are described in this article: peek-aboo, matching faces and ...
